According to Maxwell Craven (Keeper of Antiquities at Derby Museum), the CHAWNER family were an old yeoman family from Church Broughton (ten miles west of Derby). They went on in the 18th. and 19th. century to be a notable dynasty of London goldsmiths; a younger branch became surgeons in Derby and Burton for several generations. Another married a Duesbury, the family that founded the porcelain company. A Thomas Chawner was the owner of Ashbourne Green in 1776
According to the Bishops Transcripts for Derby All Saints, Edward Houghton married Millicent CHAWLNER, but this could be a transcription error.
As her husband died intestate she had to apply to the Consistatory Court for administration of his estate: -
