Notes by May Houghton with the portrait in Jersey.
"This was given to May Houghton by her Mother Eliza Mary Houghton to whom it was presented some 20 years previously. Houghton Houghton, eldest son of George Houghton and his wife Mary Ann, was born 18th. April, 1808. In 1840 he married Emilia Gourie but they had no children. For nearly 20 years (22.12.37-30.12.73) he was British Vice Consul and Lloyds Agent at Las Palmas, Grand Canary. I can remember him showing me some handsome silver, which Lloyds had presented to him.
It was customary for the Lloyds Agent to visit the vessel to count the bales and sign the papers. However my Uncle had some reason for suspecting trouble. Therefore telling his wife and Don Alphonso Gourie in case he should not return, he went to the Mole where the goods were ready for inspection and insisted on opening every bale. His suspicions were correct, the top bale contained cochineal and the rest sawdust. I think the owner had intended to set fire to the ship and claim the insurance money. Although my Uncle's action was the only one possible to an Englishman, a bribe was attempted. He threw the man over the side. His friends thought he was lucky not to be arrested.
Foreign Office List 1887. he was unpaid Vice Consul at Las Palmas, G.C. from 1 Sep 1837-30 Dec 1873 when he resigned.
