Edward Houghton was (see note below) one of some 700 burgesses of Derby who had the right to trade from a shop within the borough - he was a butcher. He had a shop in Butcher Row for which he paid a rent of one shilling a year in the 1729 rent roll.

There is a reference to Edward (butcher) in the parish register of Friar Gate Chapel, which recorded the birth of his first child, Sarah.
